高速道路に路線番号を付すことにより、訪日外国人をはじめ、すべての利用者にわかりやすい道案内の実現を目指す「高速道路ナンバリングの実現に向けた提言」（平成28年10月24日高速道路ナンバリング検討委員会とりまとめ）を踏まえ、高速道路の路線名に併せ、その地固有の言語に依存しない路線番号を用いる「ナンバリング」を導入します。

Japan’s Expressway Numbering System
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) is introducing an expressway “numbering system” to effectuate easy-to-understand road guidance for all expressway users, including foreign visitors to Japan. The system combines expressway route names with route numbers that are independent of local place names and dialects. It is based on the “Proposal for Realization of Expressway Numbering” (report of the Expressway Numbering Exploratory Committee of October 24, 2016).
